Final Reflection Post
This term, I had a lot of success with drawing from observation, as well as working with found images. I feel like my biggest success this year was the layering project, which I had a lot of fun doing, and I was satisfied with the final product. One of the reasons that I consider it a success is because I had never worked with found images on a wooden board before, but I spent a lot of time on it and I think it came out well. The biggest challenge for me was the first project that we did, the Statement of Purpose project, where I painted a wedding scene in black and white using acrylic and watercolor. I had a lot of trouble making the painting look realistic and more like a photograph. It was the first time I had used paint to make a black and white scene, and that proved to be difficult. This term, my creative process changed and I became more independent in planning and creating my pieces. The projects that we did were more open-ended than projects I have done in previous art classes, and I was able to be more creative when it came to the planning process.

Influence: Quote from Looking for Alaska by John Green
"Thomas Edison's last words were 'It's very beautiful over there'. I don't know where there is, but I believe it's somewhere, and I hope it's beautiful."

Juxtaposition Project
My idea for this project is to place a stereotypical "beautiful" family moment/portrait in front of something that is not beautiful. The statement I am trying to make is about how people often ignore the issues of world around them, and instead choose to stay absorbed in picture-perfect moments.
The background would be painted/drawn and the family in the front would be a glossy magazine cut-out or a collage of a few different pictures.
Some ideas for the background:

Some ideas for the background:
- deforestation (rainforest being torn down)
- Oil spill
- Nuclear explosion
- Floods in Japan
- War in Iraq
- Dump
- Royal wedding (William and Kate) or any wedding on a beach, and in the background have the BP oil spill

Statement of Purpose Project
Theme: Inner beauty, (or beauty that is not related to the physical appearance of an object/place/person) vs. external beauty
On a personal level, I have never been obsessed with appearances, and I while I have always appreciated things that were aesthetically pleasing or appeared beautiful, I have been more concerned about inner beauty. I am more likely to appreciate an act of kindness or selflessness than a gorgeous sunset. "Beauty", to me, has always meant love, and safety, and peace, rather than dresses and make-up and jewelry.
People today tend to be obsessed with outer beauty and appearing beautiful, instead of actually acting or being beautiful on the inside. As a culture, we are more likely to commend someone for wearing a gorgeous dress on the red carpet instead of donating money to charity or loving their family.
The TV show Bones, is a good example of my theme because the main character, Temperance Brennan (portrayed by Emily Deschanel), is beautiful, but it doesn't affect her work. She is intelligent, strong and courageous, so her personality has a beauty that is separated from her external beauty.
I chose this theme because I was brought up in a country that is obsessed with external beauty, and I thought that it would be interesting to explore a different side of beauty. I want to explore the other definition of beauty that is often overlooked, the one that I was brought up to appreciate.
2 Questions:
What is it that makes someone beautiful?
How does the appreciation of beauty vary from person to person?

Essential Questions
On your blog do some writing in response to the essential questions for the course: How do artists develop content and ideas for their work? What kinds of techniques, behaviors, and habits allow artists to turn their ideas into meaningful works of art that engage the viewer?
Artists develop content and ideas for their work by observing the world around them and using experiences that they have had as inspiration. They can also use stories or experiences other people have had as inspiration. The best artwork has a subject that is meaningful to the artist.
Techniques they use to make their ideas into meaningful works of art include portraying their idea in a creative way that allows the viewer to understand precisely what the artist is trying to show.
